What is Restorative Yoga?

Restorative yoga is suitable for practitioners of all levels. By definition, restorative yoga is a restful practice that holds yoga poses (asanas) for a longer duration using props like yoga blocks, blankets, and bolsters. It is a practice of deep relaxation that emphasizes the meditative aspect of yoga—the union of body and mind. Through the use of props for support, many of the postures are held almost effortlessly. When the body enters a state of relaxation the mind can also consciously relax as tension is released from both body and mind. The only work that's required on your part during a restorative yoga practice is to pay attention to your breath and become aware of any sensations or thoughts that may arise.

Benefits of restorative yoga may include

  • Stress Reduction Restorative yoga promotes deep relaxation, which can help reduce stress levels and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • Improved Flexibility Holding gentle poses for extended periods helps increase flexibility and mobility in the muscles and joints without straining the body.

  • Enhanced Recovery This practice is particularly beneficial for athletes or individuals recovering from injury or illness as it supports the body's natural healing processes and aids in muscle recovery.

  • Better Sleep The relaxation techniques practiced in restorative yoga can improve sleep quality by calming the nervous system and promoting restful sleep patterns.

  • Lower Blood Pressure Regular practice of restorative yoga has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Pain Relief By gently stretching and releasing tension in the muscles, restorative yoga can help alleviate chronic pain, such as back pain and headaches.

  • Improved Mental Clarity Restorative yoga encourages mindfulness and introspection, leading to increased mental clarity, focus, and emotional well-being.

  • Enhanced Immune Function The relaxation response elicited by restorative yoga can strengthen the immune system and improve overall health and resilience.

  • Mood Enhancement Cacao contains compounds such as phenylethylamine (PEA) and theobromine, which can promote the release of endorphins and serotonin, neurotransmitters associated with mood regulation and feelings of pleasure and well-being.

  • Increased Energy and Focus Cacao contains natural stimulants like caffeine and theobromine, which can provide a gentle energy boost and enhance mental alertness and focus.

  • Stress Reduction The ritualistic and ceremonial aspects of consuming ceremonial cacao, along with its calming effects on the nervous system, can help reduce stress and promote relaxation and mindfulness.

  • Improved Digestion Cacao contains fibre and flavonoids that may support digestive health by promoting regularity and gut health.

  • Spiritual and Emotional Healing In ceremonial contexts, cacao is often used as a tool for emotional healing, introspection, and spiritual connection. It is believed to facilitate heart-opening experiences and deepen meditation and inner work practices.
